With Guest Speaker Dr. Barry Jones

As a fitting tribute to the prophetic qualities of Brave New World, the Huxley Titles Series opens with a trio by perhaps music's greatest visionary - Beethoven. Then Firebird traverses the cultural threads of the New World via Aaron Copland's ancestral homage and Charles Ives' extraordinarily innovative score. Completing the program, composer/pianist Benjamin Martin offers a trio-arrangement of Stravinsky's seminal ballet score, celebrating the magic of the firebird.

Melbourne Recital Centre - Salon

Joseph Haydn – Piano Trio no.31 in E flat minor 'Jacob's Dream'
Arnold Schoenberg – Transfigured Night (1899) arr. Steuermann
Felix Mendelssohn – Piano Trio in D minor Op.49

The title of Huxley's essay 'Music at Night' captures the somnambulistic and the fantastic: the program begins with Haydn's Trio No.31, nicknamed Jacob's Dream. Written on the cusp of the twentieth century, 'Transfigured Night' is an epic tone-poem drawing listeners into Schoenberg's psychological labyrinth. As a finale, Firebird Trio performs the passionate Piano Trio in D minor by the musical creator of midsummer nights, Felix Mendelssohn.
