Franz Schubert – Piano Trio No.2 in E flat, Op.100
In 2013 Firebird Trio's demonic side simmers through works inspired by Goethe's Faust. An arrangement of three trio sonatas by Corelli is followed by the ever-fascinating Tony Gould's take on 'Girl of My Dreams', the theme of which was used as a leitmotif in director Ken Parker's depiction of the Faust legend, Angel Heart. Then a paraphrase by Martin on Busoni's chilling opera Doktor Faustus, finishing with Schubert's beautiful Trio in E flat.

Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Trio in D, Op.70 No.1 'Ghost'
Firebird Trio soars to the love episode of Goethe's Faust in their second program. Following Haydn's humourous Trio in E flat is Benjamin Martin's arrangement of Liszt's 'Gretchen' - the slow movement to his Faust Symphony - a work of great emotive power which greatly influenced Wagner among others. The Faustian theme continues with Andrian Pertout's illuminating version of Girl of My Dreams, finishing with Beethoven's sublime 'Ghost' Trio in D major.

Johannes Brahms - Piano Quartet in C minor, Op.60
Firebird Trio dives into the inferno for their final concert in 2013. Opening with the Melbourne premiere of Don Kay's first trio, the menace of Stravinsky's 'The Soldier's Tale' follows with acclaimed guest artist Paul Dean on clarinet. Then, a final take on the 'Girl of my Dreams' leitmotif explored by the extraordinary Paul Grabowsky, finishing with Brahms' magnificent Piano Quartet in C minor with admired guest violist Simon Oswell.
